Two pensioners killed in accidents

TWO elderly women were killed in separate road accidents over the past two days.

One pensioner succumbed to her injuries on Sunday night after being involved in a car crash in Paphos.

Angeliki Ieridou, 72, was passenger in a car driven by her husband when they collided with a taxi attempting to take a right turn ahead of them.

Two British tourists in the taxi were injured, as were the two drivers and Ieridou, who later succumbed to her injuries.

After being freed from the wreckage, the two taxi passengers were first taken to Paphos General Hospital and then on to a private clinic.

But it was only Ieridou who was kept in for further treatment. She died at around 7pm.

Paphos traffic police are investigating the reasons behind the accident, but initial probes have shown that the human factor was to blame, with excessive speeding and negligence being named.

In a second accident, Eleni Antoniou, 76 from Limassol, died in an accident on Kolonaki Street in Limassol yesterday morning.

The 76-year-old was in the passenger seat, while her 84-year-old husband Prokopis was driving the car. Antoniou tried to turn right and crashed onto a car coming from the opposite direction. His car then hit a second vehicle that was waiting to turn into the avenue.

The woman’s death was instant, while her husband suffered multiple fractures and was taken to Limassol General Hospital where he was operated on.

The 36-year-old driver of the other car was injured but not seriously.

These latest accidents take this year’s road death toll up to 51, with five fatal accidents in August alone.
