Egyptian woman drowns in Limassol

AN EGYPTIAN woman yesterday drowned while swimming at sea near the Old Port of Limassol.

The woman’s body was seen floating by a passer-by who jumped in to rescue her. According to eye witnesses, the woman still had a pulse when she was pulled out from the sea. An ambulance carried the woman to Limassol General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Doctors also confirmed the woman sustained multiple cuts and bruises.

The woman, who doctors believe was between 35 and 40 years old, has not been identified yet. Police have not yet determined whether her drowning was accidental.

Before going into the sea, the woman was seen walking at the Molos pedestrian walkway near the Old Port. She was also seen trying to get into the sea from the large rocks that line the walkway. It is believed that the woman slipped from the rocks at some point, which accounts for the cuts and bruises on her body.

This is the latest in a string of drowning incidents taking place this summer, raising serious issues on safety and security at beaches in Cyprus.

In August alone two people drowned while swimming at the beach in the Tombs of the Kings area in Paphos, a 56-year-old British tourist drowned at an Ayia Napa beach, and a 31-year-old immigrant drowned at the beach opposite the Limassol municipal gardens.
