Autopsy shows Greek soldier died of heart attack

THE AUTOPSY on the body of the 19-year-old soldier, Themistokles Yiannakakis, serving in the Greek contingent in Cyprus (ELYK), showed the cause of death was an acute heart attack.

Yiannakakis died suddenly on Tuesday morning just before a scheduled military training at Asgata in Limassol.

Murder suspect denies killing was premeditated

TWENTY-nine-year-old murder suspect Eftychia Zari has allegedly confessed to shooting her sister in the head at close range but denies it was premeditated.

The Nicosia private teacher is believed to have given a lawyer an 11-page statement on Tuesday describing events leading up to the August 16 killing of her 25-year-old sister Eleni, which she claims was unplanned.

Soaring success for airport shuttles

THE AIRPORT Shuttle Bus service operating since July from Larnaca Airport has proved a runaway success, as more and more Cypriots chose to use it for their transport.

In operation since July 14, around 16,000 passengers have chosen the shuttle bus service for their transport to and from the airport – a huge number given that the service has only been running for two months.

Free school buses from September

THIRTY thousand secondary school students living in major towns will travel to and from school for free this September, the Road Transport Department (RTD) said yesterday.

The initiative is an extension of an existing scheme involving free bus runs for students living in rural areas and is estimated to cost €30 million for 2009.

Greek navy cadets sail into Cyprus

CADETS attending the Hellenic Naval Academy will be arriving in Cyprus on Friday for a four-day visit, in the context of a summer training trip.

This will take place on frigate Boumboulina and the general support ship Prometheus, which will sail into Limassol Port on Friday morning.

Paphos agrees to reopen avenue to traffic

THE REQUEST of a majority of shop-keepers in the Paphos tourist area was finally met yesterday with the decision to reopen Poseidonos Avenue in Kato Paphos to traffic on September 5.

The decision was announced at noon yesterday by Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas, following the approval of the Police Headquarters.
