Panayia in uproar after mukhtar stripped of position

VILLAGERS in Panayia in the Paphos district are in uproar, after they were told their democratically elected community leader Ezekiel Ezekiel, could no longer hold this position as he doesn’t live in the village.

The Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis said the law stated that all community leaders, or Mukhtars as they are know locally, must reside in the village they represent.

A HEAVILY pregnant woman has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling 1.6 kilos of hashish into the country.

CY union approves ministry compromise proposal

THE LARGEST Cyprus Airways (CY) union CYNIKA yesterday approved by an overwhelming majority a mediation proposal by the Labour Ministry that will see wage increases reinstated after a four-year freeze.

The compromise proposal was approved by 90 per cent of CYNIKA’s members at a general assembly in Nicosia.

Sixth tanker from Greece set to unload water in Cyprus today

THE FIRST phase of unloading water from tankers from Greece, is expected to be completed today, with the arrival of the sixth ship in Cyprus.

District Director of the Water Development Department Nicodemos Nicodemou said that five ships have already made two or three trips from Elefsina, in Greece, to Limassol, on Cyprus’ southern coast.
