45 minor tremors in three months

FORTY-five earthquakes registering 3.0 or less on the Richter scale were recorded between April and June this year, the Geological Survey’s Department said yesterday. The epicentres of this year’s 45 tremors occurred at distances of between two and 75 kilometres. Although the intensity of the tremors so far this year corresponded to those in the same period last year, the number of incidents was up from 37 between April and June 2007. The most recent earthquake felt by the public in Cyprus was on July 15 when a quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck in the sea between Cyprus and Rhodes, where one person was killed.

In Cyprus, the tremor was felt by residents of Paphos, Polis Chrysochous, Nicosia and Limassol but no injuries or damage was caused.
