AT LEAST one more week is needed before water from Greece floating off the coast of Limassol can flow onto the island.

The delivery will come just in time for Limassol, which according to a local water board official, would run out of water by the end of the month.

HIV rates rise among drug users

INFECTIOUS diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis among drug users are on the increase, the House Crime Committee heard yesterday.

The reason is because almost half of all intravenous drug addicts inject with used needles.

The information was presented in parliament by the Cyprus Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EKTEPN).

Cabinet approves amendments to Social Security Fund

AMENDMENTS to ensure the viability of the Social Security Fund (SSF) for the next 50 years were yesterday approved by the Cabinet.

Speaking to reporters following the ministers’ meeting, Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said the bill proposed socially balanced solutions which were as much as possible a compromise.

Outrage over Apostolos Andreas entry fee

THERE WAS outrage yesterday after it was revealed that the Bishop of Karpasia was made to pay an entry fee to visit the Apostolos Andreas monastery in the north.

On Tuesday, the Bishop paid a visit to the historic site to inspect the church before planned renovations begin. Upon his arrival, he found Turkish forces had closed the entrance and were asking a €1 entry fee.

Finance ministry against extending dual pricing

THE FINANCE Ministry is opposed to a proposal by deputies to extend the euro dual price period beyond September 30, a senior official said yesterday.

Dual pricing has been in effect since last September, and was supposed to last a year, as is recommended by the EU Commission.
