Former president Glafcos Clerides admitted to clinic

FORMER PRESIDENT Glafcos Clerides was taken to the Evangelistria Clinic yesterday afternoon suffering from a lung infection

Eighty-nine-year-old Clerides was admitted after he complained of chest pains

His personal physician Dr Iosif Cassios reported that “Mr Clerides was admitted at midday with a lung infection .The infection has subsided and the symptoms are under control, Mr Clerides’ condition is considered as “satisfactory”.

“I have conducted several tests, I have thoroughly examined Mr Clerides and as his doctor I judged that the right thing to do is to keep him in the clinic, because of his burdened medical background and because of his age, just to be safe”.

Asked when Clerides was expected to be discharged, Cassios said that “if all goes well, he will be discharged on Thursday”.

Cassios said that, “Clerides is in high spirits as always, he has not lost his sense of humour and he was watching the Christofias-Talat talks on the television”.

Clerides was admitted to Larnaca General Hospital’s intensive care unit in February last year with acute bronchitis, but following a course of treatment for cardialgia, his health had steadily improved

Clerides, a lifelong politician served as head of state from 1993 to 2003.
