Scooter gangs in Protaras

Sir,

My wife and I have been visiting Cyprus for the past ten years, staying in the Pernera area of Protaras. We look forward to meeting our dear friends and to soak up the laid back atmosphere of the town.

However, having just returned from our holiday, we were amazed and disgusted by the antics of gangs of youths who, as soon as darkness fell, took over the streets of the town on their scooters.

They carried out “wheelies” with two on board, shouted and gestured at tourists making their way out for a meal and the noise from their scooters was terrible.

We thought that we had left such anti-social behaviour behind us for a few weeks and I am sure that for the first time visitors to Pernera it must have been a terrific culture shock.

I would hazard a guess that many of the scooters would not be either taxed or insured, but sorry to say there was no sight of the law.

With the state of the world economy, tourism must be attracted to Cyprus but I am afraid that such incidents, unless dealt with, are counter productive.
