Teenage father dies in road crash

A TEENAGE father was yesterday burned alive in a fatal road accident, police said.

Constantinos Avgousti, 17, and the father of a newborn baby girl, was killed at around 4.10pm on the old Kofinou-Larnaca road outside Mennogia. He had been speeding, police said.

Avgousti’s younger brother, Irineos, was also in the car. The 15-year-old’s life was spared after passersby managed to free him from the vehicle. His older brother was less fortunate however as the driver of the oncoming car was unable to get the 17-year-old out. Avgousti’s charred remains were later found in the car’s backseat, an indication that he had tried and failed to get out.

The accident occurred when Avgousti lost control of the vehicle and swerved off course, hitting an olive tree. The car then burst into flames, police said.

Irineos was rushed to Larnaca General Hospital with cuts and burns. He was kept in for treatment but is said to be out of danger.

Avgousti had been out on leave from the army for the past two weeks. He had been engaged to the mother of his daughter.

Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
