Fuel price hikes force CY fares up

CYPRUS Airways (CY) has imposed three fuel surcharges totaling €28 on ticket costs this year alone due to a skyrocketing fuel bill that is now costing the airline an extra €5 million a month.

CY spokesman Kyriacos Kyriacou said yesterday fuel costs have now surpassed labour as the airline’s biggest expense, forcing it to pass on the extra costs to passengers.

Teenage father dies in road crash

A TEENAGE father was yesterday burned alive in a fatal road accident, police said.

Constantinos Avgousti, 17, and the father of a newborn baby girl, was killed at around 4.10pm on the old Kofinou-Larnaca road outside Mennogia. He had been speeding, police said.

VETERAN journalist, international news photographer and a leading member of the Armenian community, Georges der Parthogh, died in Nicosia on Monday at the age of 84.

“Whatever anyone says about Mr Georges der Parthogh is not enough,” said Armenian Representative Vartkes Mahdessian yesterday.

Deputies call for proper prison medical service

THE House Human Rights Committee yesterday called on the Health Ministry to take immediate steps to improve the Central Prison’s medical services.

Over the past fortnight, the Committee visited the prison twice and spotted a number of problems, especially in the medical services offered.
