Initial tests give all clear for milk

THE HEALTH Minister said yesterday that preliminary tests on pasteurised milk had shown that carcinogenic aflatoxin levels were within permissible levels.

Samples taken from local ice cream had also come back clean, while tests on other dairy products on the market were still pending.

Smoking kills 1.2 million Europeans a year

EVERY year, 1.2 million Europeans die due to smoking, accounting for 14 per cent of all deaths in Europe, Health Minister Christos Patsallides said yesterday.

The figure was given at a news conference in light of World No Tobacco Day.

The minister’s address was given by Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Yiannos Papadopoulos.

Police search for man who had sex with girlfriend’s underage daughter

A 29-YEAR-OLD Syrian man is wanted by police after being suspected of having sex with the 15-year-old daughter of his girlfriend.

The girl told a friend what had happened, who then told her mother who proceeded to report it to the police.

When questioned, the 15-year-old confirmed that she had taken part in sexual activity with the man.

Perdikis recovering after heart operation

GREEN Party leader George Perdikis is expected to return to his political duties in one week after being discharged from hospital.

The 46-year-old on Friday underwent a coronary angioplasty at the Cardiology Unit of the Nicosia General Hospital and has been recovering at home since Saturday.

Christofias sends delegation to funeral of Turkish Cypriot missing since 1963

THE ATTENDANCE of President Dimitris Christofias’ representative Vasos Georgiou and other Greek Cypriots at Saturday’s funeral of Mustafa Arif, one of several hundred Turkish Cypriots missing since intercommunal clashes in the 1960s, will go a long way to healing the long-standing rift between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Arif’s son Kutlay Erk said yesterday.

Downer still undecided on Cyprus job

FORMER Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer is still undecided on whether to take up a position with the United Nations as a Special Envoy for Cyprus or stay in local politics, he said.

Last month it was revealed that Downer was in discussions with the UN as a possible UN Special Envoy for Cyprus.

Limassol to provide disabled beach access

FACILITIES for the disabled will be installed at Limassol beaches by the end of July, the municipality said yesterday, responding to criticism it had done nothing since promising the measures a year ago.

The Green Party had criticised the authorities for “doing nothing” since the measure was first announced in June 2007.

Motorcyclist fighting for his life

PETROS Georgiou, an 18-year-old is fighting for his life after his motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck on Saturday evening at Meneou in Larnaca.

Specifically, at 7.20pm a 72-year-old pensioner from Dromolaxia was driving his vehicle on Acropoleos Avenue in Meneou.
