Cyprus talks try to sidestep ‘constructive ambiguity’

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday began informing party leaders about his meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat last Friday.

Christofias faced a barrage of criticism from some of the parties over Friday’s joint statement, and was accused of selling out Cyprus’ sovereignty because the statement used terms identical to those in the rejected Annan plan.

Boy chasing after ball is critical after being hit by car

RAPHAEL Neophytou, a boy of just eight years of age, is in critical condition after being hit by a car on Sunday evening at the Ayiou Sila area in Limassol.

A UKRANIAN artiste working at a nightclub in Limassol has tested positive for HIV, raising concern about the spread of the virus, given that it is believed the woman was having sexual relations with cabaret customers.

Price of bread rising yet again

THE PRICE of bread is going up by up to another 15 per cent, the second such increase in less than a month, in response to soaring increases in the international price of grain.

FILMGOERS were upset at the weekend to discover that their 50 per cent SaveMax discount vouchers were rejected by K-Cineplex for the new Indiana Jones movie.

According to a sign at the K-Cineplex, anyone purchasing a ticket is entitled to a 50 per cent discount using their SaveMax voucher.

Beating victim testifies against police

MARCOS Papageorgiou, a 29-year-old man from Nicosia, relived the night of his beating by a team of Rapid Reaction Unit (MMAD) members yesterday as he testified before the Criminal Court.

Papageorgiou recognised eight out of ten of the MMAD members who have been charged.

Fake euros and cannabis tracked by SBA police

SBA police in Akrotiri have tracked down 24 fake €200 notes and 41 grams of cannabis after chasing a suspicious vehicle and seeing one of its passengers throw the items out the window.

“The incident took place on Sunday when two SBA patrol cars went to the Livadi area after receiving information that poaching was taking place,” said Andreas Pitsillides, SBA Deputy Police Chief.

Parliament calls for overhaul of Eurocypria

THE HOUSE Finance Committee yesterday called for a radical overhaul of charter firm Eurocypria, which has been experiencing a bumpy ride since it was bought by the state from Cyprus Airways.

The committee wants to know what the government’s future plans are for Eurocypria, which also recently came under scrutiny by the Civil Aviation Department.
