Hot summer for electricity bills

THERE will be a 27 per cent increase in electricity bills over the summer, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) announced yesterday.

The new rises have again been blamed on increases in the international price of mazut, which according to EAC spokesman Costas Gavrielides has risen by 56 per cent.

Boy dies from accident wounds

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD Russian boy died yesterday after being critically injured in a road accident earlier this month, police said.

The boy had been at Nicosia general hospital since May 9 following an accident in Mesogi, Paphos.

The child was seriously injured when he was knocked down by a 61-year-old motorist when he attempted to cross the road.

Police chief says relatives should be warned of prison release

POLICE Chief Iacovos Papacostas yesterday gave strong backing to the idea of setting up a mechanism to inform convicts’ families of their impending release.

“We can’t know when someone is going to be released or not, but we should come up with a way to tell families when a prisoner is being released,” he said.

Heat wave over by the weekend

A HEAT wave which has descended over the island over the past several days is not expected to last into the weekend, the Weather Services said yesterday.

Senior Meteorological Officer Stefanos Loizou said temperatures began to rise on Monday, when 34 degrees Celsius was recorded.
