Football hooliganism spirals out of control

A MAN was seriously injured at the weekend after being attacked by a gang of balaclava-clad hooligans with bats and pickaxes outside the APOEL Football Club building in Nicosia.

The 27-year-old needed eye surgery after being hit with a stone in the violent attack against three APOEL fans by 20 men in balaclavas.

Water from Greece could flow as early as next month

WATER transport from Greece can begin as soon as next month, the Chairman and CEO of Ocean Tankers Company, Michalis Ioannides, said yesterday at the ceremony for the signing of the contract between the company and the Water Development Department.

THE CENTRAL Bank of Cyprus yesterday issued an announcement informing the public that all banks would be closed on the following dates: Friday, April 25 (Good Friday) , Monday, April 28 (Easter Monday), Tuesday, April 29 (Easter Tuesday), and May 1 (Labour Day).

Car registrations up so far this year

REGISTRATION of motor vehicles for the first three months of 2008 reached 17,024, an increase of 4.3% compared to the first quarter of 2007 (16,325).

According to the Statistical Service, private saloon cars increased to 12,625, recording an increase of 3%, compared to 12,262 in January-March 2007.

Greek and Turkish Cypriots join up to save the Cyprus donkey

OVER 2,000 Greek and Turkish Cypriots have joined forces in order to protect a rare breed of feral donkey, once labelled by President Makarios as “the only true Cypriots on Cyprus”.

The animals could be under threat of extinction from reckless hunters, disgruntled farmers and drought, environmental activists have warned.

Limassol to host boating and fishing fair

THE FIRST Boating and Fishing Fair will take place in Limassol between May 2 and 4, aiming to bring together professionals and consumers, giving them the opportunity to view the latest products and services in boating and fishing.

The event is organised by Limassol Municipality in co-operation with Fishing magazine.

Heat and dust over coming days

THE METEOROLOGICAL Services yesterday warned of high temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees and dust for the next three days.

“Unfortunately, the general circulation of the atmosphere helps in the transfer of dust from Africa,” said Kyriacos Theophilou, Director of the Meteorological Service, adding however, that the dust appeared not to be very thick.
