Holiday clubs are the new timeshare

THE UK’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) yesterday warned Cyprus to stamp out bogus holiday clubs before they take hold and damage the tourist industry.

Holiday or ‘vacation’ clubs are an offshoot of timeshare activities. They emerged when the EU brought strict legislation to protect consumers from timeshare.

Bring in smoking ban or see 50,000 die

ONE IN FIVE children in Cyprus today could die of smoking-related conditions if smoking is not banned from all public places, a top public health expert warned yesterday.

The all-out ban should include bars, caf?s, nightclubs and restaurants, where potentially lethal second-hand smoke particles are as much as 40 times the recommended limit.

Five-hour talks yield agreement on three more committees

PRESIDENTIAL Commissioner George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, the adviser to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, agreed details for a further three committees and working groups yesterday.

The two men met for five hours at the Ledra Palace to bring the total agreed committees and groups to eight out of the 13 originally proposed.

Christofias calls for suggestions on National Council reform

PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias has asked all members of the National Council to submit their proposals on ways to make the advisory body more effective.

Water transport tenders on the table

TENDERS for transporting water from Greece were submitted to the Water Development Department yesterday.
