David Allerton is a qualified, freelance Physical Therapist. He also holds an advanced personal training instructor’s certificate at the highest level (3) and works to restore function and improve mobility in people who have sustained recent physical impairment or injuries in the past. He also offers clients highly structured fitness training programmes, and, if needed, weight control classes.
What is it supposed to do?
It doesn’t matter if you broke your leg climbing a tree when you were six years old or broke a hip on your sixtieth birthday, with any injury the chances are there will still be some residual pain or discomfort. This means scar tissue will have formed, resulting in the healthy tissue not being as elastic as it should be.
Blood circulation is also interfered with and this can cause a build up of toxins. Then the muscle begins to spasm, which adds to the pain level and if left untreated the injury will ‘blow up’ again whenever stress is placed on it.
David creates a bespoke rehabilitation programme, allowing the person to regain functional fitness. The programme will include massage treatments to enable the body’s soft tissue to be healed, stimulate circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage, while releasing endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.
What benefits does it claim?
Physical therapy promotes overall fitness and health. Treatment increases joint mobility, decreases inflammation and relieves muscle pain and tightness. It also increases flexibility, enhances blood flow and lymphatic drainage. There’s increased level of relaxation, which in turn aids in reducing stress levels.
Posture testing and movement based tests are able to ascertain if any muscles have been shortened or weakened or if they have been tightened, thus inhibiting normal movement by incorrect exercise or poor posture. Muscle shortening can cause a variety of problems.
What’s it like?
Depending on the problem, whether it be overall fitness problems, trouble with muscle, bone, nerve, joints or a combination of factors, David can deliver a series of deep tissue massage sessions, exercises, or devise a bespoke programme covering any of the treatments, plus there is the added advantage of having a full fitness training and physical therapy combination.
If you bang your knee you instinctively rub it, hurt your arm you grab it. In humans the need to be touched is very basic and that’s what this type of massage is about, it’s healing, it’s firm but not painful.
Our guinea pig had previously been unable to play golf due to a case of tennis elbow. After the massage he said. “David was super professional, he explained everything he was doing, and his knowledge of the human body is amazing. I liked this way of massaging, could immediately feel the muscles in my arm feeling better. In fact, everywhere he touched I felt the effect of his treatment, my muscles and tissues being somehow triggered to behave correctly, it was also so relaxing, and yes my elbow, my entire arm, is now so much better”.
Is there any science behind it?
Lots, the profession is an advanced form of physiotherapy, which has held a recognised professional standing for decades.
