Hotels will close down if water supply is cut

HOTELIERS from the Association of Tourist Enterprises (STEK) yesterday warned that without water, their hotels would have to close down.

The desperate appeal came as industry chiefs warned some factories would have to stop work without water, while private clinics said operations may have to be postponed unless they were guaranteed continuous supply of water.

Areas refusing to cut water threatened with further reduction of supply

THE AGRICULTURE Minister yesterday warned local authorities to pass on water cuts to consumers or face further reduction in their supplies.

But a top-level meeting to discuss the water crisis held little comfort for hoteliers’ industry and private clinics, who had all called to be exempted from the cuts, with the government sticking to its policy decided last week.

Warning over HIV drug

THE PHARMACEUTICAL Services yesterday issued a European Medicines Agency (EMEA) warning over the possible increased risk of heart attacks with use of an HIV drug.

Abacavir is sold by GlaxoSmithKline under the brand name Ziagen, but it is also an ingredient in Kivexa and Trizivir.

Arsonists destroy Ayia Napa restaurant

A FIRE burst out around 6am yesterday at the Camelot restaurant in Ayia Napa, with damages estimated at approximately €50,000.

Head of Famagusta CID, George Economou, reported that from the investigation conducted by the police, it appeared the fire had been set deliberately when the experts discovered that the door of the restaurant was forced open.

Almost 100 complaints against police

ALMOST 100 complaints against police were examined by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) last year.

The majority of complaints were lodged against officers serving in the districts of Limassol, followed by Nicosia, Paphos, Larnaca, Famagusta, the police headquarters, and Morphou.

MINISTERS yesterday said authorities would work in the next 15-20 days to resolve some traffic congestion in Nicosia but it could be two years before the capital’s problems were entirely solved.

Last night’s meeting was chaired by Justice Minister Kypros Chrysostomides, who said there were some direct and immediate solutions that could be taken for smoother traffic flow.

Beating victim identifies police officers on trial

THE trial of ten police officers accused of assaulting two students two years ago continued yesterday with the testimony of a key witness.

Yiannis Nicolaou told the Nicosia Criminal Court that he positively identified five of the suspects.

Man held for armed mugging

A 40-YEAR-old-man from a village of the Nicosia District was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, illegal possession and transport of a firearm, and attacking and causing bodily harm.
