Deal reached on talks committees

GREEK and Turkish Cypriot mediators yesterday agreed on the titles for six working groups and seven technical committees that will lay the groundwork for a resumption of Cyprus talks, possibly in three months time.

It took just a couple of days for Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami to agree to the titles.

WATER cuts will kick in from tomorrow, with consumers supplied water three times a week for around 12 hours, the Nicosia Water Board decided yesterday.

AN IRANIAN failed asylum seeker is entering his 20th day of a hunger strike at Larnaca police station today.

The 43-year-old was arrested on March 7 after his visa expired. He has refused to let food pass through his mouth since, surviving only on water and tea with sugar.

Immigrants claim they were shot at by Turks

THE 17 illegal immigrants arrested on Tuesday trying to cross over from the north told police during questioning that they had been shot at by Turkish troops, according to media reports yesterday.

New head for TEPAK

PROFESSOR Antonis Constantinides was yesterday appointed head of the Cyprus University of Technology’s (TEPAK) temporary administrative committee.

Constantinides has replaced Andreas Demetriou who was last month appointed as Education Minister.

Truck drivers protest against village road humps

COMMERCIAL truck drivers working at a quarry in Parekklissia village outside Limassol yesterday closed the exit to the village from the Limassol-Nicosia motorway, in protest at the placement of humps on the road to prevent vehicles from speeding when passing through the village.
