Iacovou: Turkish side not ready for Ledra crossing point

THE Turkish military is not ready to allow UN personnel into the Ledra Street area of the Green Line to give the all-clear for infrastructural work that would allow the crossing to open, it emerged last night.

Reports said Turkish troops talked of “technical problems” that would prevent the UN’s entry to the area for the time being.

Mystery over injured man found on pavement

A MAN found lying unconscious on a pavement of Omonoia Street in the Ayios Ioannis area of Limassol and currently in hospital in a critical condition, was most probably the victim of a hit and run accident, police said yesterday.

Danish Foreign Minister to visit

DENMARK’S Foreign Minister Per Stig Moller will pay a working visit to Cyprus tomorrow until Friday, it was announced yesterday.

Moller is due to attend a ceremony for the naming of a street in Paphos in honour of Denmark’s mediaeval King Eric I the Evergood, who died in Cyprus during the crusades.

KEO sells prime Paphos land to developers

KEO GROUP has sold prime land at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos for €66 million to a joint venture of Athienitis and Aristo Developers, reported yesterday’s Politis.

According to the paper, development of the land will be uniform though two-pronged. Commercial development will be handled by Athienitis, while Aristo Developers will be responsible for housing construction.

UN name interim replacement for Moller

UNFICYP yesterday confirmed that Michael Moller, the Secretary-general’s Special Representative in Cyprus would be replaced by Elizabeth Spehar, the Director of the organisation’s Political Affairs Department responsible for Europe.

Protest over plans to reopen Machairas quarry

A DEMONSTRATION took place on Sunday against the possible reopening and expansion of a quarry in the Machairas Forest.

The quarry, from which diabase rock is extracted, has been closed since 2003 when the company, Farmakas Ltd, stopped operations.

Stavrakis expects growth to hold up

CYPRUS expects growth of between 3.5 and 4.0 per cent this year, and inflation to moderate to 3.0 per cent by the end of the year, the Finance Minister said yesterday.
