MTN launches mobile broadband in Cyprus

PRIVATE mobile phone operators MTN yesterday announced the launch of mobile broadband, through the provision of their 3.5G service – the first such technology available in Cyprus.

The new 3.5G is an enhancement to the third generation (3G) technology, which offers faster mobile internet access speeds, allowing users to download data up to five times faster than with 3G.

Israel insists it will not recognise north

THE ISRAELI embassy in Nicosia said yesterday it did not recognise the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north, but said nothing about preventing the opening of a ‘TRNC’ office in Tel Aviv.

The embassy was responding to reports that the Turkish Cypriots were planning to open a trade office in Israel.

Animal grazers in protest against imports

ANIMAL grazers yesterday gathered outside Limassol Port to prevent the entry into the country of approximately 1,000 animals imported from Bulgaria via Pireaus Port.
The protesters say the imports jeopardise the sustainability of the local market, and claim they are of low quality and do not meet regulations.

Shark caught off Latsi

IT’S 3.5 metres long, 1.4 metres wide and weighs 350 kilograms.
These are the measurements of the shark caught in Latsi in the Paphos district yesterday morning.

The Mayor of Polis Chrysochous Angelos Georgiou said that, “the shark is a species which lives in the open sea.”

Russian released after 12-hour ordeal

THE ordeal of Russian land developer Viacheslav Shimkevich, who was kidnapped on Tuesday noon, came to an end early yesterday.

Shimkevich was set free after a 12-hour nightmare which saw the 60-year-old being psychologically, but not physically, abused.

According to police, the kidnapping appears to be an all-Russian affair, fuelled by financial motives.
