Soldier critical after crash

CONSTANTINOS Christou, 19, was seriously injured in a car accident in Paliometocho yesterday around 2pm.

Christou, a soldier from Mammari, was in the car with two teenagers, 16 and 17, who suffered lighter injuries.

Christou is currently in critical condition and supported by a ventilator at Nicosia General Hospital, while the other two young men from Akaki are being kept there for precautionary reasons.

The three youths were driving on Dionysios Solomos road headed for Meniko when Christou lost control of the vehicle, went through an electricity pole and ended up in the back yard of a house.

“The car leaped and turned in the air,” an eyewitness said.

Police have surmised that excessive speed and Christou’s inexperience behind the wheel are the two most probable causes of the accident.

Meanwhile, however, frequent users of the road have complained that it was the road itself that was dangerous and that it has been the scene of multiple accidents in the past.
