Water from Lebanon?

THERE will be no water cuts in the near future: instead the government is hoping to ship water over from Lebanon.

The decision was reached in a three-hour meeting yesterday headed by new Agriculture Minister Michalis Polynikis.

The minister said the aim was to find solutions to the dire water situation that would be as painless as possible for the public.

‘Water cuts are not the solution’

A WHISTLEBLOWER within the water authorities yesterday warned of the health dangers of cutting supplies, as state officials discussed ways to beat the drought.

Although the government said water cuts were not on the cards for the near future, the increasingly desperate water situation did force the previous administration to tout it as a possibility.

Iacovou in contacts ahead of talks

PRESIDENTIAL Commissioner George Iacovou has begun a round of contacts related to the upcoming meeting of the two leaders and for the opening of the Ledra Street crossing, he said yesterday.

Although no firm date has been fixed for the meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, it is expected to happen in the week of March 17 to 24.

Brand new car set on fire while engine running

A BRAND new car worth €14,500 caught fire, with the engine running and the driver at the wheel, police said yesterday.

The car was parked on a pavement on a Limassol street, with the engine on and its 47-year-old owner at the wheel. The fire was noticed by passers-by in the early hours of yesterday.

Squaddies caught up in drug sting

SQUADDIES had yet another run-in with Cypriot police in the early hours yesterday, this time because of suspected drug possession.

No less than five soldiers from the British Bases at Dhekelia were involved in an incident around midnight at an area near Ayia Napa harbour.

The area had been under surveillance by police as a drug trafficking hotspot.

Jewels stolen

JEWELLERY of a total value of €41,000 has disappeared into thin air from the home of a 65-year old woman from Paralimni.

The woman claims to have stored the jewellery away on New Year’s Day and only looked for them again yesterday.

The 22 items, which included a diamond ring and seven gold pounds, had been packed in nylon bags.

Soldier critical after crash

CONSTANTINOS Christou, 19, was seriously injured in a car accident in Paliometocho yesterday around 2pm.

Christou, a soldier from Mammari, was in the car with two teenagers, 16 and 17, who suffered lighter injuries.

Warm weather for bank holiday weekend

WEATHER conditions over the bank holiday weekend will be warmer than average, the Meteorological Services announced yesterday.

Director Kyriacos Theofilou said that temperatures will be over 20 degrees Celsius, which is above average for the time of year.

“On Sunday and Monday, there will be fair conditions with some cloud,” he said.

Talks bid to avert airport strike threat

IT APPEARED as if threatened strike action at the island’s two airports was on hold yesterday, as unions and management entered negotiations on a dispute over employment conditions.

A spokesman for airport operator Hermes spokesman, Adamos Aspris, said: “There are some negotiations going on.”
