Merkur opens first shop in Limassol

LIMASSOL-based D. Nikolaou & Sons Ltd have announced the opening of the first Merkur outlet in Cyprus, Merkur D. Nikolaou, in Zakaki. Merkur is a European-wide franchise with a total of 80 outlets in a Europe and a 110-year presence in the market.

“We are very happy to announce this partnership with Merkur, especially as this month marks our 40-year presence in the Cyprus market. Starting with a small shop at Heroes Square in 1968, our company is now among the 100 biggest in Cyprus, with a profit of €55million per year,” said Phideias Nikolaou, President of the Board of Directors.

Merkur D. Nikolaou will offer a wide range of products and equipment for the home and the professional, as well as DIY products. “Our 4,500m² space houses over 20,000 products and everything you can imagine to help you put your ideas into action,” Nikoalou added.

Nikolaou explained that the choice of location – Zakaki – was initially criticised as an unlikely host for a high-quality store. “The southern part of Limassol has traditionally been undervalued, compared to the eastern part. We have invested in a €7.5 million-worth structure in Zakaki and we are happy as it has become the crown jewel for the local community, dispersing some initial negative predictions,” he said.

“Our first shop’s location at Heroes Square, in Limassol’s red light district had also been criticised. However, it is not the place but the people that make the difference,” Nikolaou added.

The company plans to open a second Merkur outlet in Nicosia in the near future.

The opening of Merkur D. Nikolaou at Zakaki will take place today between 9am and 7pm.
