Two Britons killed in Coral Bay crash

TWO BRITONS were killed last night after their car smashed into a police car parked on the roadside.

The incident took place at 2.30am on the Coral Bay-Kissonegra road in Peyia, with the victims named as Nigel Downing Waite, 45, and Caroline Edwina Talbot, 42. Both were permanent residents of the village of Empa.

According to police, an officer of the Paphos force was conducting roadside checks at the time and signalled for Waite to pull over.

For unknown reasons, Waite lost control of the vehicle and smashed into the police car, which was parked two metres from the pavement. The force of the impact caused the police car to overturn

Investigators have said the patrol car had its flashing blue lights and headlights switched on at the time.

Both the Ambulance and Fire Services were immediately dispatched to the scene, with Talbot having to be cut free from the wreckage after becoming trapped.

The Britons were rushed to Paphos General Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The officer involved was not injured in the crash and has since said that Waite had been speeding.

An autopsy is expected to reveal whether he had any excess alcohol in his blood.
