Traffic Offences

THE island’s motorists were caught committing 2,275 traffic offences between December 24 and 30. As part of ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce the number of traffic accidents, police carried out a nationwide traffic campaign in the last week of the year. As a result 2,275 charges were issued against motorists, including 1,412 for speeding, 59 for not wearing a seatbelt, 18 for not wearing a helmet, 78 for not keeping hands free to drive and 162 for drink driving.
During the period in question, 126 road accidents occurred resulting in two deaths, nine serious injuries and 28 minor injuries. The District Courts sat through 213 cases, from which seven people had their driving licences suspended.

THREE siblings were remanded in custody for six days by the Larnaca District Court yesterday in connection with charges of forgery and impersonation. The three brothers and sisters from Kosovo were arrested on Wednesday at Larnaca Airport when they tried to board a plane for Rome using fake Italian identity cards. The man, 26, and his two sisters, 28 and 21, later told police the fake documents were sent by their father in Italy who they were on their way to visit. Airport officials found old Yugoslav passports in their luggage.
Larnaca CID is investigating the case, and has sought assistance from Interpol on the three Kosovars.

THE American Academy in Larnaca will be holding a cultural event at Larnaca Municipal Theatre next Monday at 7.30pm as part of its centenary celebrations. The choir New Song from Geneva College, Pennsylvania USA will participate in the event held to celebrate 100 years of the American Academy in Cyprus.

THE Larnaca section of left-wing union PEO is offering subsidised examinations for osteoporosis next month. A machine brought from Sweden using the latest technology will be available at PEO House in Larnaca at 9.30am on February 13 for those interested. The subsidised fee comes to €29.05 per person.
