Humour and sarcasm

While many galleries close over the Christmas period, a few will remain open for art lovers. And if you are looking for art to buy you may well be tempted by the work of Zenon Tzebras.

Tzebras is a Cypriot artist living and working in London and is inspired by artists like Paula Rego and Jenny Saville. His paintings are full of bright, colourful human figures. The surrounding space, whether of an exterior or interior, is left comparatively neutral and unspecified.

As you browse through all the works, you’ll encounter all the theatrically staged scenes he brings to life, full of humour and lively sarcasm. The artist aims to portray contemporary life through mythological symbols and narratives, and specific references are clear in some of Tzebras’ works such as ‘Odysseia’, ‘The Gaze of Oedipus’ and ‘Minotaur Dreams’.

Simply Red in one-off performance

A few years back it was a shock to us all that Sting was jetting in to give a concert in Limassol. A year later, it was a delight to hear that Bryan Adams was going to be giving us a night to remember. As the summers in Cyprus get better and better, it’s now time to look forward to a performance by Simply Red.

That’s right, the red-haired boy and his band will be giving crowds the chance to sing away to those pop/soul rhythms that have made the band so famous throughout the world.

Performing at the Pafiakos Stadium on June 7, you can now get hold of tickets at all Buysell outlets throughout the island. Taking you on a journey back through the decades, it’s going to be a full-on extravaganza, with many of his greatest hits.
While you may be aware that Simply Red was born back in the early eighties, you may not know that the band takes its name solely from front man Mick Hucknall’s distinctive red hair colour.

Interestingly, Simply Red will be disbanding after a tour next year, and their latest album named Stay is their last. With the album standing as a tribute to blues and R&B artists Bobby Bland, Mick describes it as the perfect work to put a book-end to the Simply Red story.

Intricate patterns full of colour

What do aquatic flora and fauna, Japanese comic books, Byzantine patterns, and Turkish tapestry designs all have in common? Although they may at first seem totally unrelated, they have all influenced the work of Ketta Ioannidou, a Cypriot artist who was chosen to exhibit her fabulous work in the current Alexandria Biennale.
Ioannidou spends most of her time in New York where she busies herself with exhibitions and presentations. If you want to catch a glimpse of her art here in Cyprus though, you can head down to the Diatopos Centre of Contemporary Art where she will have her work on show until January 18. Reflecting the connection between landscape and imagination, her works transport the viewer into a magical work full of colour and intricate patterns.
