School pioneers bio-diesel experiment

STUDENTS and teachers at the Apostolos Markos lyceum in Archangelos, Nicosia, yesterday presented the pilot project of the installation and operation of a bio-diesel unit in the school premises.

The project was achieved through the joint initiative of some of the chemistry, technology and economics students and teachers of the school, who were actively involved in the project since last year, devoting many hours per week from their leisure time in order to make this happen.

The students, working in teams, collected cooking oils from their households and then produced the bio-diesel at the school’s special unit, following a chemical procedure which was demonstrated in detail to all present at yesterday’s ceremony. For the time being, the bio-diesel produced is used to run various small engines and will soon be used for the school’s central heating unit.

The project is being conducted with the support and financial assistance of the school’s committee and the Cyprus Organics Advisory Group (COAG), which is supported by UNDP-Action for Co-operation and Trust.

“This initiative aims to encourage students to understand the value of renewable sources of energy and to expose them to more environmentally friendly solutions. The initiative can also prove to be an excellent example for other schools to follow, preparing the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens,” said a statement issued by UNDP-ACT.
