PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos continued to dip in the polls for the second month running while both of his rivals, AKEL’s Demetris Christofias and DISY’s Ioannis Kasoulides continue to rise.
A Noverna poll published in Politis on Sunday showed Papadopoulos stood to glean 29.8 per cent in the first round of the elections, a drop of 0.3 per cent since the November poll. In June Papadopoulos registered at 31.2 per cent.
Meanwhile Christofias jumped 1.1 per cent since November to 29.5 per cent while Kasoulides increased his share by 0.2 per cent to 27.3 per cent.
In June Kasoulides was sitting at 26.2 per cent and Christofias at 23.1 per cent, indicating the AKEL leader’s substantial gain in the polls in the last six months.
When it comes to a second round in the election, the poll shows that in a Papadopoulos-Kasoulides run off, the incumbent president would walk away with 45 per cent of the vote compared to Kasoulides’ 33.6 per cent.
It also shows that in such a run-off, 21.4 per cent would cast a blank vote.
In a Christofias-Kasoulides second round, Christofias would take 41 per cent and Kasoulides 34.5 per cent but the number of blank votes would increase to 24.5 per cent.
If Papadopoulos and Christofias make it to the second round it would be a tie at 39.2 per cent each, the poll found while 21.7 would vote blank.
When it comes to the age of voters, Papadopoulos is the least popular to those in the 18-24 age group, which would vote either for Christofias or Kasoulides who received 34 per cent and 32 per cent respectively in that category.
The 25-34 age group was evenly split with 27 per cent to each of the three candidates. The 35-44s also revealed an even split, giving 29 per cent of the vote to each.
Christofias was the clear winner among the 45-64 age group, taking 32 per cent.
Papadopoulos was at 29 per cent and Kasoulides 26 per cent.
But the over 65s would vote overwhelmingly for Papadopoulos. Over 43 per cent say they will vote for the incumbent compared to only 24 per cent for Christofias and 23 per cent for Kasoulides.
When the poll was broken down into party affiliation the results were even more interesting.
Only 70 per cent of DIKO voters would vote Papadopoulos – the party he belongs to. From supporting EDEK, only 62 per cent chose Papadopoulos.
DISY candidate Kasoulides would glean 72 per cent of party voters and 78 per cent of Akelites say they will vote for Christofias.
Ten per cent of AKEL voters will pick Papadopoulos and three per cent Kasoulides.
Nearly ten per cent of DIKO will choose Kasoulides and seven per cent of EDEK. Eight per cent of DIKO would give their vote to Christofias and 13 per cent said they would vote blank.
From EDEK 14 per cent said they would cast a blank vote but 15 per cent will vote for Christofas and seven per cent for Kasoulides.
Also a good percentage of DISY – some 15 per cent – will pick Papadopoulos, three per cent will pick Christofias and nine per cent will vote blank.
