Art Exhibitions

Constructing art and dance

Art lovers will know that the Municipal Arts Centre (the Old Power House) in Nicosia has a great reputation for holding innovative art events and often cutting edge exhibitions. In cooperation with NIMAC and EKATE, they just recently launched another interesting project named ‘Under Construction’. Continuing until May 2008, the centre will be organising exhibitions, projections, lectures, dance shows, theatre and musical events all within the framework of the ongoing project.

If you go along to the centre this month you can browse through two exhibitions consisting of work by local artists. The first, named ‘Disaster and Oblivion’ explores the idea of catastrophe through art, while the second is a ‘Self Portrait’ exhibition with a whole series of portraits by a host of talented artists.

As Christmas approaches, the centre will thud to the sound of electronic beats at a party organised on December 21 with live music by Tramba Audiovisual Conspiracy. As an experimental group, Tramba will give a fun performance as they combine quality tunes with moving images from the work of local artists. While you bop away to the music you can enjoy a drink at the specially set up bar, that double up as an interesting art installation in its own right.

NIGHT LIFE
A wild night out with Digweed

It’s not often that we write about night life events more than a week in advance here at Seven. But on December 19, there is an occasion coming up that simply has to be at the top your going out list when it comes to Christmas outings. We are talking about none other than John Digweed’s performance at the Pavilion in Nicosia. It’s time to get your mitts on a ticket and start the plans for a truly wild night with one of the world’s most famous DJs!
Playing in Cyprus as part of his worldwide ‘Transitions’ tour, English-born Digweed is arriving on the island following performances at Panama in Amsterdam and Bracaleone in Rome. After his show in Cyprus, he’ll be wowing party-loving crowds at the infamous Fabric club in London.
Digweed has long cemented his name in the pages of dance music history. He reached the very top of his profession at the turn of the century when he was voted no. 1 world DJ by a reader’s poll of DJ Magazine in 2001. Highlights of his career include the first proper DJ mix compilation (Renaissance done with Sasha) and being the first British DJ to hold a residency at New York’s Twilo, once the world’s best-known club.
Since then, he’s climbed even higher. He has either created or been a part of Bedrock, Northern Exposure and Renaissance and produced a number of excellent mix CDs. His Kiss100 radio show is now in its second year as one of England’s most successful dance music shows with internet broadcasts all over the world. His latest Transition mix CD shows Digweed at the top of his form.
There’s certainly good reason why he’s one of the most respected DJs in the world, and at Pavilion you can expect nothing less than the very best. Prepare for sets filled with moodiness and musical mystery but held down with a punchy distinctiveness and earthly rhythm. The night will also include opening sets by Stefano Mendoni, George Messitis and Andrew P, with a special guest appearance by Groove Therapy.
