Report shows best places for shopping

CARREFOUR is the cheapest place to shop in most towns for milk, pork and olive oil, a survey by the Commerce Ministry revealed yesterday.

As part of its monthly price monitoring, the Ministry surveyed supermarkets in all towns checking a list of 33 items.

In Nicosia, Carrefour proved the cheapest for seven items, and it shared first place with Orphanides on six items. Athienitis was cheapest for eight of the products in Nicosia, including cheese, yoghourt, spaghetti, sliced ham, and eggs,
Milk at 58 cents was cheaper at Carrefour and Orphanides than at rival supermarkets but it costs two cents more in Paphos at all supermarkets.

Athienitis won the halloumi battle at £4.80 a kilo in Nicosia but it was cheapest at Sarris supermarket in Paphos at £4.60.

Carrefour’s olive oil per litre was the cheapest in all towns but while it cost £1.99 in their Nicosia and Limassol outlets, it was priced at ten cents more per litre in Carrefour in Limassol and Paphos.

For a loaf of Cypriot bread Orphanides was cheaper in Nicosia at 52 cents. Carrefour was the cheapest in the other three towns but at 64 cents a loaf.

But while a three-litre bottle of corn oil can be bought for £1.99 in Athienitis in Nicosia, the cheapest it can be found in the three other towns is £3.03 in Carrefour in Limassol and £3.05 at Carrefour in Larnaca and Paphos.

Orphanides has the cheapest kilo of sugar at 49 cents in Nicosia but 48 cents in the other three towns.

In Larnaca, Tremethousiotis supermarket was the cheapest place in town to shop for yoghourt at 69 cents, edam cheese £3.25 per kilo, beef £3.95 a kilo, sliced ham at £1.29 a kilo and sugar at 48 cents.
