Prices creep up yet again

THE ONLY item on a list of everyday goods and services that did not see a price increase in September was parking fees, the Finance Ministry said yesterday.

National Guard launches battle against drugs in forcecs

THE DEFENCE Ministry said yesterday it had launched its own drugs hotline to help conscripts as well as their friends and family.

The number, 1404, will be connected as of next week, and is for emergency purposes on a 24-hour basis, National Guard medical chief Dr Christakis Kyprianou said.

Limassol CID yesterday received information that someone had prepared fake documents claiming to be signed by the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot properties in the south and attempted to lure businessmen.

Cyprus ranks poorly in EU productivity rankings

CYPRUS’ productivity level is 85.6 per cent of the EU average, giving the island a ranking of 16 out of the 27-member bloc.

“We are not the worst but we are not satisfied being average or towards the bottom of the list,” Labour Minister Antonis Vassiliou said.

“We aim to get to the top of list like Luxemburg and Ireland: an aim we believe is possible.”

Stavrakis leads EAC into LNG accord with state

THE ELECTRICITY Authority of Cyprus (EAC) yesterday decided to get on board with government plans for bringing Liquefied Natural Gas to the island.
Following a marathon session of its board of directors, the semi-governmental organisation voted in favour of participating in a majority state-owned corporation, which initially at least will be the sole supplier of natural gas.

Priceless dictionaries recovered

THREE 400-year-old dictionaries estimated to be worth around $6 million were recovered by authorities in the north this week.

Yesterday, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper reported that the dictionaries were seized during an operation carried out in Kyrenia.

Series of burglaries in Limassol

POLICE HAVE reported five burglaries in Limassol in the last couple of days, noting a rise in the occurrence of such crimes.

In an unusual case, an elderly couple from Limassol reported that on Thursday morning they found a stranger in their kitchen, who had most likely entered through the unlocked back door.

Crime has dropped since 2003

SERIOUS CRIME has fallen ten per cent in the past five years but drug offences and illegal employment are up significantly, Justice Minister Sophocles Sophocleous said yesterday.
Speaking at a news conference about the work of his ministry, Sophocleous said road accidents and deaths were also down, having fallen 35 per cent since 2003.
