The slaughter begins

THE EUROPEAN Commission yesterday banned the export of meat and dairy products from Cyprus as the Veterinary Services slaughtered 300 animals suspected of suffering from foot and mouth.

Although Europe’s official confirmation of the disease was yesterday still pending, Agriculture Minister Fotis Fotiou said an EU expert who arrived at the weekend considered the disease a fact.

Nicosia mayor blasts state neglect of capital

NICOSIA Mayor Eleni Mavrou yesterday vented her frustration at the lack of state support for local authorities, saying the capital was suffering as a result. Mavrou argued not enough money was given for important works, while loan applications were lost in red tape preventing the municipality from implementing necessary projects.
