Help the parking crisis: build a skyscraper

THE ISLAND’S Town Planning Department has drafted a plan whereby land developers would be allowed to build 20-storey buildings in exchange for providing public parking space.

The scheme, which is yet to be approved by the Cabinet, is designed to alleviate traffic congestion that has traditionally plagued city centres and has become an almost acceptable way of life.

More sheep in new foot and mouth scare

MORE SHEEP in the Dromolaxia area have initially tested positive to foot and mouth disease, the Agriculture Minister said yesterday.

Samples have been sent to the European Lab in London for confirmation after 23 out 54 sheep in a specific farm showed initial symptoms.

Minister Fotis Fotiou called on the public not to panic and await the final results.

Pamballi plays down EU’s bad report on Paphos airport security

COMMUNICATIONS and Works Minister Maria Malaktou-Pamballi yesterday urged the public “not to panic” after reports emerged that EU inspectors had found security deficiencies at Paphos airport.

According to Phileleftheros, who broke the story, the airport was found not to comply with EU security standards and that it risked being placed under a special monitoring regime.

Student died of electrocution

AN AUTOPSY on the body of a 20-year-old Cypriot student who collapsed and died in Greece while taking an exam has revealed the cause of death as electrocution.

Buffer zone warning ahead of hunting season

UNFICYP has warned hunters that hunting in the buffer zone is not allowed, ahead of the Big Game Hunting Season, which begins on Sunday.

“We would like to remind hunters that entering the buffer zone area in order to hunt is to run the risk of drawing fire from either of the opposing forces,” a statement read.

New school road opens in Ayioa Athanassios

THE LONG-EXPECTED new road on the north side of B’ Primary School in Ayios Athanassios in Limassol was formally opened yesterday.

“The Ministry of Education must assign the necessary importance to the creation of road networks around schools to avoid the problems which had appeared in this particular school,” said Kyriakos Hadjittofis, Mayor of Ayios Athanassios.

Bank unions’ big demands ahead of contract discussions

BANK employees union ETYK has come up with 35 demands for the renewal of their collective agreements.

Employees held a meeting with the bank employers union KEST, which submitted five demands of its own, during the week to exchange views.

The trade union didn’t specify the exact salary increases it was pursuing, but it did request a steady annual pay rise.

THE JUSTICE Minister yesterday reassured the public that police were not tapping civilians’ telephone conversations.

Speaking to CyBC, Sophocles Sophocleous refuted claims made by three telecom companies during Thursday’s House Legal Affairs Committee session that police were bullying employees into giving them telecommunication details.
