Relief as tests say flock free of foot and mouth

CYPRUS is in no danger of a foot and mouth outbreak, European Lab results showed yesterday.
Farmers had anxiously been awaiting the outcome of UK tests on a herd of sheep from Dromolaxia that had initially tested positive to the disease last Thursday. Yesterday, they breathed a sigh of relief when the London-based lab confirmed that there was after all no trace of foot and mouth.

Turks say ready to open Ledra Street

THE Turkish Cypriot side said yesterday it was ready to open the Ledra Street crossing point and was just waiting for the Greek Cypriot side’s approval.

Hasan Ercak?ca, spokesman for Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, said the crossing was ready to be opened immediately.

Car torched after pet dog killed

A MAN from Dhali village in Nicosia is in police custody on suspicion of setting fire to his landlord’s car.

According to police investigators, the 26-year-old set his landlord’s Mercedes alight after somebody had poisoned his dog. The suspect and his landlord had argued in the past over the dog, which he kept in the apartment he was renting.

Convict pleads guilty to summer burglary

A CONVICT was yesterday handed an extra 18-month jail sentence after pleading guilty to break in to a house in Nicosia in August 2005.

The man is already serving a two-year sentence for burglary and assaulting a police officer, for which he was convicted in 2006.

Billboard campaign fails to ignite pupil’s election bid

A SCHOOL pupil took his election campaign a little too seriously after advertising himself on a main road billboard.

Ambitious Pascal School pupil Alexandros Papadopoulos decided to get his name into the open by splashing out on an advert which he placed on a billboard just shy of the Lakatamia area in Nicosia.
