Christofias tells UK MPs : don’t upgrade the north

Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias yesterday sent letters to British MPs calling them to exert pressure to stop their government upgrading the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in the north.

On Monday Britain and Turkey signed a partnership deal to enhance relations that included several provisions to end the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots.

Students protest over retirement age plan

AROUND 500 students staged a protest at the Presidential Palace yesterday calling on the government not to increase the retirement age.

According to student union POFEN, an increase in the public sector retirement age from 60 to 63 will result in massive employment for today’s youth. The students are especially concerned about jobs that will fail to open up in the teaching sector.

Greece protests to British about Cyprus document

GREECE summoned the British ambassador to Athens yesterday to protest about the wording in a British document concerning Turkish-held northern Cyprus.

The Greek Foreign Ministry said it called in ambassador Simon Gass after London and Ankara signed a co-operation agreement that included a reference to the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”.

Sorcery charge lands woman in court

A WOMAN of 69 was in court yesterday charged with using sorcery to con a Nicosia man out of money.

According to police, Hariye Rezvanoglu, who lives in the north, had pleaded not guilty to conning a 34-year-old man from Acropolis in Nicosia by telling him that he had been cursed and she could cure him for £5,000.

She was arrested in October last year.
