Passenger fears ground CY flight

A CYPRUS Airways flight to Athens was delayed for hours yesterday when a group of passengers refused to fly, citing fears for their safety.

On embarkation, around 30 passengers complained of the heat inside the Airbus, demanding that they be transferred to another flight.

Refugees warned over Turkish property commission

THE PROPERTY commission in the north is offering Greek Cypriot applicants a fraction of what their land is worth, reports said yesterday.

Phileleftheros reported that as soon as the Turkish side had handed over the names of Greek Cypriots who applied to the commission to the Council of Europe, the amount of compensation started falling.

Earth shook 45 times from July to September

CYPRUS felt a total of 45 earthquakes from July to September, with seismologists saying the island has experienced less activity compared to previous months.

According to the Seismology Department, out of the 45 quakes, only five were actually felt in Cyprus.

From April to June this year, a total of 48 earthquakes were recorded in the area.

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos visited Pelendri yesterday for the official opening of the new Citizen Service Centre (CSC) in the village.

The Centre at Pelendri is the fourth such service point in the country; Nicosia CSC has been operating since December 2005, Limassol CSC since October 2006 and Polis Chrysochous CSC since January 2007.

Tassos lashes out over EOKA B claims

AN ANGRY President Tassos Papadopoulos has lashed out at allegations that he consorted with leading cadres of EOKA B, a 1970s right-wing paramilitary organisation linked to the coup that precipitated the Turkish invasion.

The accusations were made by AKEL, until not long ago partners in the coalition under Papadopoulos.

The two-day fundraising event, held every year in aid of children with special needs, had garnered some £1.6 million at around 9pm last night.

Private sector credit up 24.7 per cent

BANK credit to the private sector rose 24.7 per cent year on year in September, edging up from the 24.2 per cent year on year growth of August, the Central Bank said yesterday.

Provisional figures released yesterday suggested credit growth was strong in spite of Central Bank appeals to commercial banks to show restraint and be more prudent in lending cash.
