Government submits new proposal on Ledra Street

THE government has submitted a new proposal for the opening of the crossing point at Ledra Street, spokesman Vassilis Palmas said yesterday.

Palmas said the proposal was handed over to UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon when he met President Tassos Papadopoulos in New York last month.

Police falling short over height restriction

According to yesterday’s Phileleftheros, Justice Minister Sophocles Sophocleous has proposed changing the current rules on minimum height for recruitment to the police force after receiving a number of complaints over the requirement.

Police Complaints Commission deals with 37 cases

THE POLICE Complaints Commission said yesterday it had received 37 new complaints during the past five-month period.

The complaints were lodged with the independent authority between May 1 and September 30.

Investigations were launched for 20 of the 37 complaints, 17 of which are still under investigation.

United Democrats defend decision to back Christofias

THE United Democrats yesterday defended their decision to back AKEL presidential candidate Demetris Christofias over its own party member Costas Themistocleous.

Michalis Papapetrou, a member of the party, said the decision was simple mathematics. “By definition every single vote Mr Themistocleous will get will come from either Mr Kasoulides or Mr Christofias,” said Papapetrou.

Conscript killed in motorway crash

AN 18-YEAR-old conscript was killed yesterday in a road accident.

Demetris Demetriou from Limassol was fatally injured on the Limassol-Nicosia motorway just after 1pm. The accident occurred in the Kakoratzia area, opposite the Cyprus Telecommunication Authority’s Makarios Satellite Earth Station, where traffic headed for Limassol was limited to one-lane, police said.

Poll shows Tassos firmly out in front

THE SECOND part of a Politis poll on the presidential elections published yesterday showed that a large percentage of AKEL voters are satisfied with President Tassos Papadopoulos’ positions on the Cyprus issue.

The first part of the poll published on Sunday puts Papadopoulos in the lead with 30.2 per cent of the vote, an increase of 2.2 per cent since a similar poll in July.
