Man held over arson and rape claims

LIMASSOL Court yesterday remanded in custody a 33-year-old man suspected of arson, while rape charges brought forward by his estranged wife are also being investigated.
Police believe the man set fire to his estranged wife’s car, while it was parked in Limassol’s Omonia area. The crime occurred in the early hours of Monday. In its decision yesterday, the court ordered that the suspect be remanded for six days, in order for police to complete investigations.

Meanwhile, the suspect’s 32-year-old estranged wife has made statements to the police alleging that he had been physically and sexually abusing her. The woman said these crimes occurred in the beginning of this year. According to her statements, the suspect forced her to have sex with him, often with the threat of an ornamental sword he kept.
The man has denied these allegations and the police continue to investigate the case.
