Take 7: mayonnaise

Heinz P’tits
I got my little brothers to try this one and they looked really impressed. The packaging is cute and follows a clever marketing agenda but at least what’s inside is actually worth the fuss. P’tits, with 60 per cent less fatty ingredients, no preservatives and colourings seemed to gain a few points from the little people although good luck with squeezing the stuff out as the bottle’s a bit stiff. Could also do with being the other way up.

Marks and Spencer Classic Mayonnaise
Simple, understated, reasonably priced and tasty – is there anything wrong with Marks and Spencer’s classic mayonnaise? Well, it’s definitely a lot different to the rest and has extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and spirit vinegar, which you can smell from just opening the jar. But it really looks and tastes like one of the healthiest options out there.

Ambrosia
A few people mentioned trying Ambrosia, one of our local brands. I’m all for trying Cyprus products even though disappointment almost always creeps up but not with Ambrosia. With no artificial flavourings or colourings, it is definitely among the highlights of this collection and makes a very good French fries escort.

Granovita
From the very beginning, this was one brand I showed a deeper interest in. Displaying an ‘egg and dairy free’ statement on the front sticker, I was keen to see how tasty mayonnaise can be without the vital ingredients. The verdict? Not bad! You won’t miss the egg-y taste because the garlic is overwhelming. So if you are a big fan of garlic (who isn’t?), this one will keep your taste buds satisfied.
Price: £1.25 (€2.14)

Hellmann’s Cholesterol Free
If you’re a declared mayonnaise fan, you will know that no trying or testing can be complete without Hellmann’s. For a change, I thought I would try out this cholesterol free one. One tablespoon of Hellmann’s Cholesterol Free and you’re looking at 50 calories. Not bad. Definitely a good idea for those who love mayonnaise but hate the thought of how unhealthy it is.
Price: £0.90 (€1.54)

Heinz
Oh Heinz! How could you not love it? Although this is the only brand whose ketchup I would ever eat, I’ve never been a fan of their mayonnaise. Or to put it more accurately, I’ve never thought about trying their mayonnaise. Proudly displaying eggs on the front sticker, if you’re tired of all these ‘no egg’ and ‘no dairy’ nonsense, you can rely on Heinz to give you it. Real mayonnaise. Enjoy!

Viofoods
Usually available at fast food joints, I’m thinking anyone who has sat at one at 3 or 4 in the morning has definitely spread their fries or burger with this. Personally, I love it and tend to shove it in my shopping cart whenever I spot it. Tasty, again containing eggs and vinegar, it may be lacking healthy properties but it does win in one department: it has very few calories in the 450g plastic bottle. Plus the taste is divine.
