Two crew missing as Cypriot Salamis Glory rams fishing boat

THE Cypriot cruise ship Salamis Glory rammed into a fishing vessel coming out of the Israeli port of Haifa late last night leaving two of the trawler crew missing.

The fishing boat sank off the Israeli coast after colliding with the Salamis Glory, Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service told Reuters.

It said 12 other people who had been on the fishing boat were rescued in the incident. An Israeli military spokesman said helicopters had been scrambled to help in the search and the navy was on standby.

According to Cypriot police the incident happened at around 10pm when the Salamis Glory was leaving the port.

“The Salamis Glory collided with a small fishing boat, which capsized,” a police duty officer in Nicosia said. The trawler’s crew jumped into the sea as the vessel sank.

“The Salamis Glory immediately sent out its lifeboats in a search and rescue operation to help pick up the crew of the fishing boat,” the spokesman added.

He said initial reports indicated that the Cypriot ship sustained no damage or injuries to any of its passengers or crew.
