Palmas: Annan plan gave Turks everything

THE GOVERNMENT believes Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots accepted the UN-proposed solution, the Annan plan, since it “gave them everything”.

Commenting on remarks by Turkey’s new President Abdullah Gul that one of the greatest successes of Turkish policy was the acceptance of the Annan plan, Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said “of course it was a success in that they would have gained everything they had asked for and even more” had the plan gone through.

“It would have been a great surprise if the Turks had said no and we had said yes to this plan,” Palmas pointed out.

Palmas said that after the simultaneous referenda on the Annan plan in April 2004, the Turkish Cypriots appeared to be in a better position, but when the Greek Cypriot side explained the reasons it had rejected this specific plan, this picture changed.
