Kart track closes after tragedy

THE GO kart track in Paphos where a 12-year-old Belgian tourist was killed last week has been temporarily closed down.

The Yeroskippou Municipality managed to attain the order while investigations into the August 21 accident are still on-going.

Little Valentine Weekers had visited the track with her parents, who were all holidaying in Paphos, on Tuesday before last when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the track’s rubber surround.

She was rushed to Paphos General Hospital and then to Nicosia due to the seriousness of her condition. She passed away four days later.

According to the victim’s father, Valentine told him the steering wheel had locked and that was why she lost control of it.

Yeroskippou Mayor Tasos Kouzoupos yesterday told the media: “Yeroskippou Municipality, as we stated last week, has moved ahead in cooperation with its legal advisor and secured an order to suspend operations at the go kart track where the accident took place.”

The order, he added, was handed over to the track owner yesterday and went into force straight away.

Kouzoupos also pointed out that the owner could appeal the decision and request a cancellation of the order once the case reaches court on September 3.

Meanwhile, the owner of the track obeyed the order and suspended its operations from yesterday morning.
