Young tourist injured in tragic crash

A 12-YEAR-OLD Belgian girl was yesterday fighting for her life after she was injured in a go karting accident in Paphos, police said.

Valentine Weekers, who was holidaying in Cyprus with her parents, was injured at around 7.30pm on Tuesday at a go karting track in Yeroskipou municipality.

Ex-policeman committed

A FORMER policeman was yesterday committed to psychiatric care by a Nicosia Court after complaints that he was harassing his former wife.

The 37-year-old had been arrested on March 25 last year on charges of pimping women and assaulting women who had allegedly refused to sleep with customers of the cabaret he was believed to have been running.

Former Yukos official battles extradition

THE NICOSIA District Court is examining an extradition order from the Russian authorities for a 37-year-old businessman, who is a former official of Russian oil giants Yukos.

Yesterday, the Russian’s defence lawyers Giorgos Giorgiou and Michalis Pikis cross-examined a witness from Russia.

Teenager arrested in hit-an-run incident

A TEENAGER was yesterday arrested and remanded in police custody in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left a 16-year-old pedestrian in hospital.

Giorgos Antoniou was struck by a car as he tried to cross Giorgos Kranidiotis Street in Latsia on Tuesday evening. The driver of the car abandoned the scene of the accident, leaving the injured boy bleeding on the road.

Police seize 40,000 pirate DVDs

POLICE have charged and released two men from Polis after confiscating 40,000 pirated DVDs at a video rental and two tourist supermarkets in the area. The haul was the biggest ever in Cyprus, police said.

Cypriots top A level results

CYPRIOT pupils scored top international marks at A level in seven subjects according to Edexel, the largest awarding body in the UK.

A record 77 local pupils scored top marks in Accounting, Fine Art, Modern Greek, Government and Politics, Ancient History, Maths and Pure Maths.

Cyprus sees greatest fall in car prices

CYPRUS has seen the greatest fall in car prices in the EU over the past year, the European Commission has announced.

According to a Commission report, the reductions came at a time when the average European price for a car increased by 1.1 per cent.
