Hit and run injures two in Limassol

A BULGARIAN couple were seriously injured in a hit and run accident on Limassol’s coastal road on Sunday evening.

The accident took place at 7pm on 28 October Street when a 74-year-old male driver ran over the 29-year-old man and 27-year-old woman as they were crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing.

The driver abandoned the scene, but passers-by noted his number plate and called the emergency services. The police soon identified the driver, who was arrested at his home later in the evening. Police say the 74-year-old confessed to his involvement in the accident, and was subjected to an alcohol test that found no traces of alcohol in his system. He was later released.

“We are investigating the reasons behind this hit and run incident, but it seems like a case of an elderly driver who got frightened and left the scene,” said Limassol District Police Constable, Periklis Christodoulou. “He later confessed his actions. He will, however, be charged for leaving the scene of the accident and possibly for reckless driving. This case will be taken to court in due time.”

The two victims suffered serious injuries and have been admitted to the Orthopaedic Ward of Limassol Hospital, where they are expected to be kept in for several days.

They sustain injuries to their elbows, joints, knees and pelvis. They are presently bed-ridden but are able to communicate with their environment.
