ARCHBISHOP Chrysostomos came under sustained attack yesterday after describing daily Politis as a “Turkish newspaper”.

Chrysostomos made the remark over the weekend after the paper suggested he was meddling in the 2008 presidential campaign by rooting for the incumbent Tassos Papadopoulos.

THE DEFENCE Ministry has played down an incident in which on-duty soldiers on the Green Line were robbed of their assault rifles and ammunition at knife point.

Yesterday, a 42-year-old man, who managed to steal two guns and ammo from soldiers at a guard post after threatening them with a knife, was arrested and remanded in custody for four days.

Temperatures set to hit the 40s again

TEMPERATURES are expected to hit the forties again with weather forecasts predicting a new heat wave starting tomorrow.

Yesterday, the Head of the Meteorological Service Kyriacos Theophilou warned of an increase in temperature, but added that the heat wave would not be as bad as the two heat waves that claimed the lives of several elderly people around the island in June and July.
