Critics turn on government over ‘oil flop’

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday tried to stay upbeat in the wake of criticism that its oil plans amounted to a flop, after just four companies expressed interest in offshore hydrocarbon exploration south of the island.

Cyprus had 11 offshore blocks on offer. Thursday’s bids concerned a US company bidding for one block, and a consortium bidding for another two.

Buses threaten strike if trams get the green light

THE INTRODUCTION of a tram system to Nicosia is on the table again, much to the displeasure of bus and taxi drivers across the capital.

Bus drivers have in fact threatened that if such an idea is even considered, they will go on an indefinite strike in September.

Heatstroke conscript ‘steadily improving’

THE HEALTH of a National Guard conscript being treated in Israel for heatstroke is steadily improving, the Defence Ministry said yesterday.

According to the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Petros Kareklas, 18-year-old Neophytos Georgiou is slowly getting better, after being struck down with heatstroke during the heat wave almost a month ago.

SCORES of holidaymakers destined for Crete, have had their holidays cut short after not agreeing to an alternative flight when the Hellas Jet plane they were set to travel with broke down.

Meanwhile, in Greece, around 80 elderly couples were yesterday left stranded as Hellas Jet was unable to accommodate them with an alternative flight back to Cyprus.

Paper on the trail of boy who disappeared in 1974

A TURKISH man who saw a photograph of missing child Christakis Georgiou in Sabah newspaper contacted Politis saying the child in the photo was familiar to him, the paper reported yesterday.

Since early this year, Politis has been pursuing leads in Turkey in an attempt to track down Georgiou, who disappeared after the Turkish invasion when he was five years old.
