Man threatens to kill taxi driver with sword

POLICE were yesterday still looking for a man who pulled out a sword on a taxi driver when he was asked for the fare.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a Larnaca taxi driver drove a foreign worker to an address in Nicosia’s Kaimakli suburb.

According to reports, the passenger was holding a large cardboard box throughout the journey. When the pair arrived at the specified address, the taxi driver asked the man for £25. However, instead of paying him, the passenger pulled out a one metre sword, which had been hidden inside the box, and threatened to kill the driver.
Nicosia police chief Kypros Michaelides said the foreigner spoke in English and told the taxi driver he had no money to pay him and that if he said anything he’d kill him. Terrified, the driver let him go and the man disappeared in an unknown direction, police said.

The driver described his assailant as of normal build, 1.80 metres tall, around 22 years old, and dark.
Omorfita police station is investigating.
