Tales from the coffeeshop

A WEEK ago, we were told to economise on electricity because our power stations could not cope with the demand and there would be power cuts. This week, we were told to economise on our water use because “in a few weeks there will be no water left in our reservoirs, only mud.”

A man with a destiny to make his team ‘the best’

IF THERE is one thing that wealthy entrepreneur Peter Theo has brought to Cypriot football, other than promises that he will turn his beloved AEL into the greatest club on the island, it is a touch of personality.

The British Cypriot businessman moved to the island 15 months ago and it wasn’t long before he started his love affair with football club AEL Limassol.

Guardian angel of the AIDS children

SHERRY KARANJA smiles down at the 10-month old infant she is cradling in her arms. When she first found him in the hospital, abandoned by his parents, he was a five-month-old with respiratory complications who weighed less than two kilos.

Cops hunt brothers after sword attack

POLICE yesterday launched a nationwide manhunt for two brothers, aged 23 and 28, who attacked four officers with swords after they came to search their Limassol home for drugs on Friday night.

Confronting the police

Sir,

On the way into Parekklisia there is a speed limit of 40km/h. In a confrontational mood, I decided to was follow a police car at his speed – he (and I!) were going at 70km/h. The car stopped in the village – this was my opportunity! I pulled up in front of them and walked back to make the point… One of the policemen looked sheepish, the other tried to make a joke about it.

Priced out of Cyprus

Sir,
Last year my family chose to go to Athens for our holidays as it was much cheaper than Cyprus. We had a very good time, but we also felt that we should have been in Cyprus which is our second home and where are families are.

I can’t save the world by myself

Sir,

A headline last week read, “Floods and heat may abound but is it global warming?”
I applaud the person leading this team at Oxford University for taking such an opposing stance towards the rest of the world and just investigating to see if global warming is real. However, I fear that people are missing the whole point of this battle against global warming.

Food prices and the euro

Sir,

It is disingenuous for those in authority to say food prices won’t increase next January when Cyprus enters the little-loved euro zone.

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother

Sir,
I couldn’t agree more with Haig Assadourian’s letter (Cyprus Mail, August 1) about the mindless use of our precious water to hose down pavements and roads.
