‘Thraki of Cyprus’ dies aged 87

Thraki had been painting since early childhood but did not begin exhibiting her work until 1980, after which she received numerous awards and honours, including the Grand Prix from The Jagotina Museum of Yugoslavia in 1994 & 1995,and the Gold Badge in 1999 for her Cultural Services to the Serbian State.

Born in Famagusta in 1920,Thraki moved to London in 1938 and spent the war years serving with the Women’s Auxillary Air Force during which time she met her husband Keith. In 1945 she moved to Wolverhampton and began studying art in 1953.
During the invasion in 1974 Thraki and her family fled Famagusta and spent ten months in a refugee camp Dhekelia. The family then moved to Limassol and from there to Platres, then Nicosia and subsequently to Lemba in Paphos in 1989.
Up until 2005, she had held at least 35 solo exhibitions in Cyprus, London, Moscow, Athens and the former Yugoslavia and taken part in numerous group exhibitions, Funeral details are expected to be announced at a later date.
