Jealous man attacks pregnant girlfriend with cutter

A MAN has been remanded in custody for viciously attacking his pregnant girlfriend with a cutter.

The 37-year-old Romanian suspect is under investigation for causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a dangerous weapon for the attack that took place in Kapedes village in the Nicosia district.

Yesterday, CID Investigator Demetris Christou told a Nicosia District Court the events of Tuesday night, which left the suspect’s 38-year-old girlfriend in hospital where she received a total of 11 stitches.

Both the wife and her unborn child are safe.

“On the night, the suspect and the plaintiff had an argument,” the investigator told the court.

“His employer, who also lives in the apartment above them, heard the row and went to check on them. After calming down the suspect, he eventually took the suspect’s girlfriend upstairs to his apartment, so they could both calm down.”

But the court then heard how the suspect’s anger escalated into a frenzied and violent attack on his girlfriend because he suddenly became suspicious that his girlfriend was having an affair.

“Early the following morning, and while his girlfriend was sleeping upstairs, the suspect entered the apartment, began hitting her and, after forcing her out of the apartment, threw her down the stairs.

“They both eventually ended up on the pavement outside the apartment building. He then began attacking her with a cutter and she sustained injuries to her head and neck in the attack. The employer was a witness to the assault but did not manage to prevent it in time.”

Christou added that his department had so far not found the cutter used in the attack.
The suspect was arrested and taken to the police station in Lakatamia, where investigators took a statement from him.

He reportedly informed them that he had attacked his wife because he was convinced she was having an affair with someone.

Judge Lemonia Kaoutzani remanded the suspect in police custody for eight days.
